ALL IN THE NAME….

August 5, 2012 1 comment

I’m sorry it’s been so long between postings…..while July offered some wonderful vacation time with family and friends it was also a month of loss and addition to the FatJoe Clan…

The addition is our new puppy….and being FatJoe what else could I name her???

Meet Brisket……she is a 6 week old Blue Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog)……and…..yes…..she is named after a slab of slow cooked, smoked meat….

SHE’S AS CUTE AS SOME BRISKET…

How we got to the name is kinda interesting….

As we began discussing getting a new puppy, we were having dinner at a Tex-Mex joint and were throwing out names….and almost in a kidding way I suggested Brisket…I got the EYE-ROLL on that and we proceeded to names like, Winnie and Dixie….

We had to drive out to see her at the breeder’s and found out it would be a week or two before we could bring her home….

LUCY….THIS IS BRISKET YOU CAN’T EAT

On the way home I floated the name Duckie….and The Wife didn’t say no to that….and eventually it came down to  Winnie or Duckie…..

One night on the phone with The Mom-In-Law, The Wife threw out that I wanted to name the dog Brisket……and The Mom-In-Law laughed and told her that it was a cute idea….later that same week we were with the Big Willie Family and Mrs. Big Willie also chimed in with saying that Brisket was a very cool name for a puppy….especially for FatJoe’s puppy….

I guess sometimes it takes someone  else pointing out brilliance……and The Wife lives with such outstanding brilliance on a daily basis that I guess at times she just takes it for granted….and to her credit, once the light switch flipped on……she came around to  what everyone else could so clearly see……

 AND BRISKET IS HER NAME-O……

Next we get back to the rest of the Memphis/Nashville tour and then on to Hawaii Part II…..

HUNKA-HUNKA BURNIN’ LOVE…

We woke up on day two of the Memphis/Nashville Triple D Tour to a very overcast Memphis sky….the local weather girl was warning of showers throughout the day…

The Wife and I saddled up in the rental car and headed for Graceland….part of the Graceland complex is a little strip center that has a 5 or 6 different shops that you can tour and buy Elvis stuff….there’s even a Elvis Harley shop….I had done some internet searching before we left Houston to find out who served a grilled peanut butter/banana samich….there was a cafe in this strip center that touted the “Samich Fit For The King”….so…..this was our first stop….

THE KING’S SAMICH

The Rock-N-Roll Cafe was a nice little joint….nothing fancy….but it was a good spot to start our day with Elvis…we found a booth and sat and the waitress brought us some menus….and there it was…..a grilled peanut butter and banana samich…..$4.95….

We ordered….The Wife went with a cheese burger…..and we waited and listened to some 50’s rock and discussed what the day might hold…we were both excited to be going to Graceland and were hoping not to get caught in a down pour….

Our food arrived and my PB&B samich was less than impressive….not sure what I was expecting but this wasn’t what I saw Elvis living on …..I had to remind myself that looks aren’t what’s important…..the proof is in the taste…..which is supposed to be in the puddin’…..right…..uh…..whatever….

DOESN’T LOOK LIKE MUCH….BUT IS DANG GOOD

This little un-assuming samich was pretty darn good….not sure if Elvis invented this himself, or not, it was tasty….I’m from a long line of weird peanut butter samiches…..there’s PB& Cheese……and PB& Bologna…..(try them before you judge)…..but I’m telling you that PB& Nanners is wonderful….the bread was toasted and the PB sorta melted around the nanner…..I found my lip curling up and I really wanted to kneel on the floor and throw both my hands in the air….just as The King use to do…..but….I didn’t have a sequined cape and that’s one of those things The Wife would whump me for….

After breakfast we headed to the Graceland parking lot and no sooner had we bought our parking pass than the bottom dropped out and we sat in the car deciding on what to do….

Well….we hadn’t come this far not to go check things out so we dashed to a covered walkway and waited for the rain to subside with some other Gracelanders…my biggist worry was I was wearing my new bright green shirt from Marlowe’s and I could just see myself walking around with skin dyed bright green…

RAIN….RAIN….GO AWAY….

We finally waded in and bought our tickets….here’s a little Graceland advice from FatJoe….

FAT ELVIS AIN’T GOT NUTTIN ON FATJOE

1) there are 3 levels of tickets….$32, $36 & $70….not really sure what the $70 gets you but the middle ticket gave us a full day of Elvis….

YUP…..THE PINK CADDY

2) along with the tour of the house the $36 gets you 5 other exhibits on the property…..I would recommend the car museum, the airplanes, Elvis’s influence on culture….the two things that weren’t so hot were the ’68 Come Back Special, and the making of The Elvis Tour movie….

OK….THESE LETTERS BLINKED OFF AND ON….I TRIED BUT COULDN’T GET IT….THE WIFE GOT IT WITH ONE SHOT….

3) prepare to be there about 5-6 hours….

IF YOU GOTTA TRAVEL…..THIS ISN’T A BAD WAY TO GO

4) there were two other spots to by souvenirs off the Graceland property….the one across the street from the ticket office (on the same side of the street as the house) was the better of the two….

THE FAMOUS ENTRANCE TO GRACELAND

;

We really enjoyed the tour of the house….you will take a bus across the street to the steps of Graceland….it wasn’t as big as I thought it would be but it’s pretty impressive…..very ’70s with tons of green shag carpet…..once you leave the house you walk into the Hall of Gold which houses all of Elvis’s gold records and a lot of his movie stuff….then you move into the racket ball court which has been turned into another display of costumes and records….

You’ll then move back across the street to the other exhibits….the car museum is very cool and the planes are very neat…

We paid for the ’68 Come Back TV Special and the making of the Elvis Tour Movie….both of these were in shops next to the Rock-N-Roll Cafe…..both of these were sorta disappointing….but we paid to see them….so we did….

We bought a couple of things at Graceland but as you can imagine they mark everything up….you have to bring something home from the actual place…..don’t you???

It was a great day….if you’re near Memphis….you have to go….

Next….some of the best Fried Chicken I’ve ever shoved in my PieHole…..

BBQ, KOLACHES & GIANT SQUIRRELS

A couple of Saturdays ago we made our way to the Hill Country to visit The Mother-n-Law and The Captin….just outside Austin is a little community known as Spicewood, Tx….and in Spicewood is a BBQ joint called Opie’s….

We’ve passed Opie’s every time we go to visit and I always make the statement that “The next trip we gotta stop…..”…..and then the next trip comes and goes and still no Opie’s….here have been many reasons…..but mostly it has been because we never time the drive-by at mealtime….

This trip would be different….we were going to leave home so that when we got to Spicewood we would be ready for lunch….

We were meeting The-n-Laws and finally I’d get to try some of Opie’s Q….whether or not Opie-Cunningham-Taylor would have anything to do with what we ate was yet to be seen….

When we arrived the line was already working it’s way out the front door…we walked in to check things out before joining those waiting to order….I made my way to the T-Shirt rack and with The Wife’s help picked out another badge to wear showing another joint I’ve eaten at….after finding one that would become a part of my Fashions Of Food, we got in line and began the trek back inside to chow down….

As you get inside the first thing you’ll notice is that there is one heck of a big smoker just inside the front door….it’s open and there you can see all Opie’s meats from which to choose….it is filled with chicken, sausage, brisket, pork loin and turkey….each and every piece looks smok-eeee-licious….and it smells like heaven on earth…..

A guys stands at the smoker and asks you what you want….we decided to get enough to share between all of us…..brisket, sausage (mild and spicy) and turkey….he cuts pieces for you and puts them on a tray….you then make your way to a cafeteria styled steam table to order sides and desserts….

Besides BBQ, Opie’s is famous for their beans and tater-tot casserole….I limited myself to the beans but The Wife got some TTC….we also ordered some cherry cobbler…

We made our way to a table, put our trays down and then headed to the fixens’ table….the usual things were there plus two huge pots of beans….(Opie’s also has famous white beans….but on this particular Saturday they were out)….we loaded up and finally sat down to eat….

I hit the brisket first and on first bite…was…..not overwhelmed…..it was good…..had a decent smoke and was pretty moist…..but unless you got a piece with fat it wasn’t…..great….and there wasn’t enough fat to make every bite…..great….

The beans were next and they were as advertised…..very very good….as was the TTC…..

I then cut off some of the spicy sausage (stuffed with jalapeño and cheese) and found it really good…the casing had a great snap and the spice was just right….the regular sausage was like the brisket….good but not great….

I tried some of the turkey and while I’m not a big turkey guy (at least in a Q-sense) this stuff was really good (it was The Wife’s fave)…..it was moist and had a nice smoke to it…

The sauces they offer are “Hot” and “Regular”….the “Hot” was good but more like a hot sauce (tabasco-like) more than like a spicy bbq sauce….and the “Regular”. again was good…..but only good…

Mother-n-Law had gotten a chopped beef sandmich…and she said it was very good….

The cherry cobbler was very tasty…..and was a nice way to top off the meal….

All-n-All…..I’d say Opie’s was pretty good……they had some strong stuff…..the turkey, the spicy sausage, the beans and TTC were all really really good…..however, the brisket, regular sausage, and sauces were just kinda good….

I will stop again at Opie’s….and maybe this was a case of having built something up in my mind that it couldn’t live up to the expectations….whatever it may be….I doubt I’d get brisket again…..maybe try the ribs or porkloin…..but there is a reason to go back….

Now…..the Kolaches….

In La Grange, Tx there is a Shell gas station (imagine that) that has a bakery in it that bakes and serves some of the best Kolaches, Sweet Rolls, Cookies and Pigs-na-Blankets known to man….it’s called Weikle’s…..and it’s worth a stop if you’re ever within a couple hundred miles of it….now, my friend, Bubba, would tell you that a Kolache is not what many serve…..sausage or ham stuffed inside a roll (a pig-na-blanket)…..but, a square with fruit in the middle….this place covers both deliciously…(your lesson for the day)….

While we were at The-n-Laws they treated us to a Double Stuffed Burger….two patties stuffed with cheese, brisket (from Opie’s) and jalapenos……The Mother-n-Law and The Wife made the burgers and The Captain grilled ’em…and they were fantastic….anytime you can double your meat intake and also stuff some stuff inside…. you’ve got something extr-eee special….

And finally…..the giant squirrel….

Just outside Bastrop (on the Austin side) is a pecan store….they sell all things pecan-ish…..and as we passed it on the way to the Hill Country we noticed their 25 food squirrel standing in front of the building….we both looked at each other and said…..in unison, “We’re stopping there on the way back…..” and stop we did….it’s not everyday you can have your picture taken beside such a landmark as the Giant Squirrel…..but now I can scratch that off the ol’ Bucket List….

It was a great weekend….we enjoyed the company and another BBQ joint can be added to the list of spots I’ve gotten to try….and when you throw in The Best Little Bakery In Texas (see what La Grange is famous for….you non-Texans) and the Giant Squirrel…..FatJoe’s life is pretty dang sweet…..

SHE TRICKED ME AGAIN….

On the way home from church last Sunday we were discussing where we wanted to go to lunch….The Wife had me check what Groupons we had printed out and after looking through them we decided on trying Peli-Peli….a restaurant in the Vintage Park Shopping Center off Louetta….

Not sure how many of you use the Groupons but I’m here to tell you that you can get some wonderful deals….this particular one was $40 worth of food and we paid $20…..gotta love the half priced deals….and if you pick out spots you wouldn’t normally try…..what ‘cha got to lose???

Now here’s where the trick comes into play…..I asked what any normal person would ask…..”What kinda food is this?”…..and The Wife without losing a beat says, “South American…..I think….”

I thought for a second and concluded that for $20 I’d give some South American food a shot….

Not so fast…………..

We walk in and it’s very nice…..not coat and tie nice but more upscale than say Waller County Line BBQ…..I mean there were no dead animal heads or pictures of Willie Nelson on the walls or…anything like that…..just a very nice semi-elligant dining room….

NO ANIMAL HEADS HERE….

We were shown our seats and given our menus….and this is where….well The Wife learned FatJoe didn’t just fall off the manure truck…..or is that turnip truck…..either way…..I was on to her little game….

This wasn’t South American food…….I looked at her and she just shrugged…..”South American….South African……I got confused….”

I GUESS THEY’RE CLOSE???

R I I I I I I G H T………

She’d played me like an old upright piano…..

I grinned.,…what could I do??…..smacking her doesn’t do any good anymore….she just smacks me back…..(sure sure….)

Resigning myself to making the best of it……I studied the menu…..and there were some tasting sounding dishes….. a Sunday brunch menu was featured as well as the regular fare…..

There was an omelette that looked very good but being the creature that I am…..I landed on the sandwich part of the menu and in particular the South African Burger….homemade sausage served as a burger…..

We were deciding on appetizers when the waiter arrived and began to explain about Peli-Peli….and it’s an interesting story/concept….

Here’s what he told us (this is actually from their website but it’s more or less what he said)….

Peli-Peli (also known as Piri Piri or Peri Peri), which means Bird’s-Eye Chili, is a spice found by the Portuguese in the 15th Century on the plains of Southern Africa. The spice rapidly became popular when used to prepare sauces and marinades for Portuguese and African foods. The Bird’s-Eye Chili is the cornerstone spice for our cuisine and concept….”

The man behind the concept is Master Chef Paul Freidman (again from their website….)…“Chef Paul has had over 35 years of experience in the restaurant industry, having owned and operated successful restaurant concepts in South Africa and Germany, as well as being the creator of Paul’s Pizza Shop, a nationally-recognized pizza concept in North Houston. Executive Chef Paul Friedman has utilized the Peli Peli spice in an innovative, new way to create his own infusion of spice with exotic fruits from Southern Africa and Europe such as Guava, Granadilla (passion fruit), papaya and mango. The result is a myriad of dipping sauces and marinades that bring out the best flavors in chicken, steak, and seafood to create a tingling sensation for your taste buds.”

The waiter suggested a couple of appetizers and one of them was one I had spotted and so we ordered the Bacon Wrapped Chicken….

We got our drinks and looked the place over….it is very nice….and, not sure if they do this all the time, but…..there was a guitarist playing and more than once The Wife commented on how much she liked the music…..

Our Bacon Wrapped Chicken arrived and (sorry no camera) but this is pretty food…..there were two skewers of chicken served with some sauce….each skewer had four pieces of chicken wrapped in delicious bacon……there was also a red pepper on the plate and the waiter told us what it was….and I can’t remember the name….but a very sweet/spicy little pepper…..

The bacon wasn’t done quite enough for The Wife but I loved every bite…..and I thought the chicken and bacon were just as good dipped or nekid…..the dip was a sweet/spicy sauce that had a nice kick to it….

It was time to order and I ordered my South African Burger and the waiter kinda stopped and looked at me and asked, “You like peppers?”

I knew where he was headed as the burger right above the one I ordered was my burger topped with peppers and mushrooms done in a wine sauce….I smiled and said that I had seen the other burger but was really wanting to experience the sausage…..”You have to have the peppers….”, he insisted…..

He had been so right about everything so far that I changed my order and went with the Peli-Peli Boerwors Sandwich….traditional homemade South African sausage as a patty topped with sautéed onions and peppers in a rich red wine mushroom sauce….it came with an order of sweet potato fries….

Again I put my faith into my waiter and hoped he knew what he was talking about….

Soon he was back with our food and sat it down….. this is just pretty to look at…..the presentation (a term I’ve picked up from the show Chopped….however I’m of the opinion, while how it looks is nice, I’m more concerned with how it tastes….so….an ungly dish that knocks your socks off with taste is soooo much better to me than something that is very pretty and then stinks…..but what do I know?…..I’m by no means and “expert”….and those judges on Chopped would be so much more astute in their knowledge of what’s good and not so good than just a guy who likes to eat…..) was done very nicely…..

PICTURE FROM THE INTERNET

The waiter smiled, knowing he had impressed us on helping us with our choices (btw The Wife got the exact same sandwich….after changing her mind about 42 times….ok….ok….. only 38 times….I do tend to exaggerate….)….he asks if we need anything and The Wife asked for some mayo…..he kinda snickered and said he’d get us some but that we would not need it….

I’M SORRY SIR, YOUR SERVICES WILL NOT BE NEEDED

Well, I put my sandwich together and from the very first pickup….it was dripping…..(I like dripping…..the dripping-er the better)….

I’m not sure if sausage will ever replace what I think makes the perfect burger but this stuff was terrific….spicy but not overly done….and again the waiter had been spot-on….no mayo needed…..this burger was juicy enough on its own…the peppers and mushrooms were succulent and helped make for a very messy-wonderful samich……and it hadn’t hit me until The Wife said something….but there was no cheese involved here….can’t remember the last time I had just a burger (w/out cheese)…..but I think cheese would not have added anything to this…..in fact it may have diminished the flavors offered up….

I ate every last bite…..and had I been at the WCL BBQ I would have licked my plate…..but I can be very mannered when the situation calls for it…..just glad it’s not called for very often in places I eat….

So, what have we learned today…..

1) Groupons……good

2) The Wife….tricky

3) South American/South African…still not sure what those differences would be as I have not yet had South American

4) Its sometimes good to trust your waiter/waitress

5) Sometimes you don’t need mayo or cheese

6) An eating establishment without dead animal heads or Uncle Willie can still be a great place to eat

……and you didn’t think you would learn anything today……

THE MEMPHIS / NASHVILLE TRIPLE D TOUR

That’s right folks…..a new summertime blockbuster is just around the corner….FatJoe’s Memphis/Nashville Triple D Tour Summer 2012…. (FJMNTDTS12)…..

I know……I can’t wait either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know I kid about The Wife a lot….but to be very honest….Ol’ FatJoe couldn’t have done any better in that department….she’s very sweet to put up with my “Hobby” and is very good about indulging me in trying new places and eating a lot of the same kinda foods….

So, it doesn’t surprise me in the least that this little summertime trip was her idea….now I will take credit for tying in the Triple D stops…..(Diners, Drive-ins & Dives, for those of you not in the know)…

THE MAN WHO LAUNCHED FATJOE

Not so long ago…..in a galaxy called Texas…..my obssesion was to cover all the places Guy hit in the Lone Star State….and I was doing pretty good until I kinda veered off into the land of BBQ…..and while I am still working on completing the Triple D list in Texas, I have grown fond of seeking out new Q and new joints in which to eat it….

ONE OF MY FAVE TRIPLE D SPOTS…THE TIP TOP IN SAN ANTONIO

Back to the new tour….

We leave on a Saturday morning and arrive in Little Rock a couple hours later….grabbing a rental car we’ll make our way to Memphis (about 2 hours) and set up shop there for a couple days….from there we’ll head over to Nashville and finish up there for two days….The Wife’s Dad will meet us there and will get to enjoy the sights and sounds of Music City….

I THINK THEY HAVE MUSIC HERE…..HOPE THEY GOT SOME BBQ

From the list I have there are 15 Triple D spots in the great state of Tennessee….7 in Memphis, 5 in Nashville, 1 in Hendersonville, 1 in Nolensville, and 1 in Knoxville…..and I can see a grilled peanut and banana samich’ waitin’ for me at Graceland to boot…

MEMPHIS: ALEIENCIA’S, COZY CORNER, LEONARD’S BBQ, LITTLE TEA SHOP, MARLOWE’S RIBS, TOM’S BAR-B-Q, and UNCLE LOU’S…..

Most of the places in Memphis were on Triple D’s Memphis BBQ TOUR….

THE LAND OF PULLED PORK AND COLE SLAW

NASHVILLE: ARNOLD’S COUNTRY KITCHEN, BRO’S CAJUN CUSINE, ANTHENS FAMILY RESTAURANT, JAMAICA WAY RESTAURANT, and SAVARINO’S CUCINA….

HENDERSONVILLE: CAFE RAKA…

NOLENSVILLE: MARTIN’S BBQ JOINT…

KNOXVILLE: PIZZA PALACE…

If we do the math…..Saturday through Wednesday…..and 15 spots to hit…..but to be honest the 3 places not in Memphis/Nashville may have to be another tour…..but it’s always good to have a reason to go back….

OOOOPS……sorry bout that…..I was kissin’ The Wife’s feet…..(gotta love how she thinks!!!)

BURNT ENDS…

These are just a few little random things….I thought about calling this odds-n-ends….but anyone who knows anything about BBQ knows that Burnt Ends are some of the best “Q” you can eat…..the are the little crusty burnt “ends” of brisket…and in some joints you can have them served up…..

The first of these little extras has to do with one of my good friends at school….let’s call him Mr. BOTH (Bring On The Heat)…cuz he is the king of anything spicy and hot….the hotter the better in his book….I watched him devour 6 of the hottest wings on the menu at Buffalo Wild Wings and he never even flinched….he’s also brought me some home-made wings one time with 8 different hot sauces on them….I cried the whole time I was eating them but they were so good I couldn’t stop….the people eating lunch with me were laughing at my tormented pleasure….

NOT EXACTLY WHAT I HAD....BUT CLOSE ENOUGH

NOT EXACTLY WHAT I HAD...BUT CLOSE ENOUGH

One day last week he showed up in my room with some more homemade delights….crawfish, porkloin, sausage, a rib, potato and a mini cob of corn….they were in a big baggie and you could smell the spicy goodness through the plastic….I tucked the baggie away and decided to take it home and have the homemade meal for supper….that night I heated everything up in the microwave and while it was warming up it made the house smell like coonass heaven….I removed the steaming plate and set it on the table….I made my way to some of the peeled crawfish first and after one bite I knew I was really in for a treat….it was spiced perfectly and since it was already shelled I wasn’t going to have to work to enjoy my prize….the porkloin was next and again Mr. BOTH had outdone himself….tender and succulent…..the rib was next and he had told me he was working on perfecting his rib making…..well….there’s always room for some improvement…..but he’s well on his way…..even after a day of being baggied and refrigerated the rib pulled easily from the bone and was very tasty….I then sank my choppers into some of the sausage and found it smoked and spicy….the corn and the potato were like icing on a cake….they had absorbed a lot of the flavors from everything else and the mixture of flavors dancing in my mouth was beyond delightful……

I wish to thank Mr. BOTH for his generous offering…..He is now an official FatJoe favorite chef…..

My next work buddy….will be known as….DA’MAN…..cuz he’s one of the Assistant Principals at my school….it doesn’t take long talking to him to find out he’s an outdoors kinda guy….loves to be outside and one of those things he loves to do is hunt….

It was the middle of the day and I was starving….diets have a tendency to make you hungry….but that’s good for you……right???…..anyway I was on the verge of passing out from lack of nutrition when DA’MAN shows up with….wanna guess???….another baggie of goodies….this time is was some Deer Jerky….one of God’s most excellent creations…..he told me it was Red Stag and that it had me dehydrated for a good long time before it had been Jerky-fied…..now jerky is always gonna be sorta tough….it’s meant to be…..you should always have to tug on it with those canines and then chew it a little while…..it’s the cowboy way…..and this stuff did not dissapoint….just tuff enough to make it good jerky…..and talk about something hitting the spot….OH MY LORD…..extree-good…..

JERKY-FIED BAMBI

The other two little Burnt End items have to do with some new products I am using to enhance the flavors of most all foods I eat at home now….one is something that Mr. BOTH shared with me and the other is something I found at of all places a Marshals…

Mr. BOTH gave me some stuff called Mango Habanero Hot Sauce…it is distributed through Hubbel & Hudson….this is some incredible stuff…..if you are a fan of hot that has a sweet twist to it…..this is the stuff for you….the first thing that happens in your mouth is that sweet mango kinda teases your tongue and then the heat sorta kicks the door in…..but its not overbearing and the heat never overpowers the sweet….this stuff is great on just about anything…..I’ve had it on pork chops, in soup, on eggs, salad, and tacos….it is defiantly worth a trip to Hubble & Hudson to grab some of this…

SWEET, HOT AND DANG GOOD

The other great little sauce I’ve discovered is a hot sauce by Rufus Teague…I was escorting Moma and The Aunt on a day of shopping and Marshals is always on their list of places to visit when they drive up to the Big City….while they were snooping through the housewares I found an end cap with some BBQ items on it….as I looked through the tongs, gloves and spatulas I spotted a bottle of sauce….an old medicine bottle styled container it was dark red and had Ol’ Rufus Teague’s pic on the lable….apparently Rufus use to make this sauce in an old pot and his buddies soon were asking for it….it was $4.99 for the bottle….and I figured it would either be a great buy at that price or if it stunk it would make a cool bottle just to have around….well low and behold…..Ol’ Rufus made some pretty dang good sauce….. I bought the Blazin’ Hot variety and while it isn’t blow you away hot it’s got a nice little kick and a very good rich flavor….it was wonderful on some wings The Wife fried up one night….Rufus has a whole line of stuff and if you’ll just look up Rufus Teague online you can find a bunch of places that carry his line of sauces and rubs…..

RUBUS TEAGUE MADE SOME SAUCE

Well that’s bout it for the Burnt Ends…..just a couple of guys I wanted to thank for hooking me up with some great eats…..and a couple of things I’ve been using that I thought some of you might like to give a try…..

Till next time…..keep your powder and your pants…..dry….

ADVENTURE EATIN’ (OPIE TAYLOR STYLE)

Growing up in my house we had our own special version of the Holy Trinity….God, John Wayne and Andy Griffith….

Now Moma’s dad was a Baptist preacher….old school Baptist preacher…..if he couldn’t preach you into Heaven….nobody could…..so the God thing was pretty much a given….

Moma loves John Wayne….and we grew up watching all those great westerns…. I know I’ve seen most of his movies many many times…..now a few of the old black-n-whites may have slipped by but I would say that most of his movies from the 50’s on were seen and re-seen in my house….my faves are and this would be top to bottom…..1) The Cowboys….2)Rio Bravo….3) El’ Dorado….4) The Sons Of Katie Elder…5) The Alamo….6) True Grit….

STUMPY, DUDE & COLORADO

The Cowboys was a favorite from the first time I saw it…..and I know Rio Bravo and El’ Dorado are almost interchangable…..but I liked Dean Martin more than I did Robert Mitchum and loved the singing scene with Dean and Ricky Nelson (Rio Bravo)….and my friend Bubba would argue with me that the Jeff Bridges version of True Grit was soooooooooooooo much better than the John Wayne version….to that I say….HORSE HOOEY…..while I’ll give him some of the supporting cast was a lot better in round two……however, Jeff Bridges is and never will be John Wayne……case closed…..

NO COMPARISON

Now that gets us to Andy Griffith….to be more specific The Andy Griffith Show….to be even more specific the black-n-white Andy Griffith Shows….

There were times where Andy came on at least four times a day and we watched ’em all…..and in the course of seeing those shows over and over I grew to love each and every character that passed through Mayberry….well almost every one…..(more about that later)…the cast of regulars from Andy, Opie, Barney and Aunt Bee were wonderfully played….then you had that second tier of folks like Otis, Floyd, Gomer, Goober and Thelma Lou who added additional layers to the fabric of Mayberry …..but what made Andy an even more incredible show is those characters who would show up on occasion or sometimes even just once to add even more to the comic genius that was Andy Griffith….

First of all there’s Barney Fife….probably the greatest character of all time in any TV sitcom…..he could be funny in so many different ways…..from reciting the preamble to the Constitution to just musing his hair….Don Knotts deserved every Emmy he won…..

TAYLOR & FIFE....

TAYLOR & FIFE

But when you think about those characters that just sorta slipped in and out of Mayberry for brief moments you are amazed at the impact they had….The Darlings ( that family from the hills that sang their for their supper), to Mayor Pike (the better of Mayberry’s two mayors), Mr. Shump (who never said anything), to Leon ( who always had a peanut butter sandwich and who was Ron Howard’s real little brother), to Barney’s cousin Virgil, Raff Holister (the moonshiner who had a wonderful singing voice), and last but surely not least Daphney and Skippy – The Fun Girls…..

Each and everyone of those characters was halarious…..and for whatever reason they were in Mayberry they made that half hour fun to watch….

THE FUN GIRLS

Now I do have a bone or two to pick with Sheriff Andy….after season one Andy sorta lost his country-fied-ness….he suddenly began to speak with a little less good’ol’boy twang and really became a straight man for Barney….which still worked but….I really liked Andy less after season one….then there was Helen Crump…..who’s last name was so bad because she was only suppose to be in one episode (had they only stuck to that plan)……from the moment Andy and Helen hooked up, Andy became a very henpecked man….a lot of episodes from the TAHC (TIME AFTER HELEN CRUMP) revolved around Andy trying to pull himself out of hot water with a jealous Helen….and to be perfectly honest of all the women they had for Andy to date over the years….Helen was kinda…..DOGGY……and we won’t even begin to touch how not really good TAGS (The Andy Griffith Show) became when Barney left and we got what we called at my house….Colored Andy……we didn’t like Colored Andy too much (sorry no racial thing there)…these were were the Andy shows in Color….

RUN ANDY...RUN!!!

I’ve watch so much Andy that I love to dialog along with the show…..drives The Wife crazy……so we don’t watch much Andy together at my house….you’ve never heard anything as sweet as FatJoe dialoging along with Deputy Barney Fife…..”Nip it…..Nip it……”

No how are we working in food into this discussion??

Well in one particular episode of The Andy Griffith Show, Opie was excited because the Taylors were having overnight guests and he was going to get to sleep on the ironing board between two chairs…..”Adventure Sleepin’…..”

OPIE....

And sometimes you have to put that ol’ ironing board between the two chairs and have some “Adventure Eatin’….”

I was at Hyde’s Cafe in Old Town Spring with a group of guys and as I’m trying to work my way through the menus of my favorite spots…..I passed over my usual cheeseburger and I went with the Bacon, Lettuce & Tomato samich…..I added some cheese and topped things off with some of Hyde’s famous onion rings…..I took my seat with my buds and waited…..

Hyde’s will never ever be known for getting your food to you in what one might call a “speedy” manor….however they clearly state that “This ain’t McDonalds”….so if it’s fast you want…..get the heck out……but, I’m here to tell you…..it’s worth every moment you have to wait for your food….

My samich arrived in the usual red and white paper lined plastic basket……it looked delish sitting there surrounded by those golden fried onion rings…..I picked it up and brought it to my mouth…..Aunt Bee would have been proud to have served this to the Lady’s Garden Society of Mayberry…..the bread was lightly toasted, the lettuce and tomatoes fresh and the bacon incredible…..not overly crisp or salty but it was the king of my BLT…..

MY VERSION OF THE IRONING BOARD AND CHAIRS

Now the adventure came in because when you saw this samich you knew……that it was gonna end up messy…..you knew it was full of some good ol’ mayo and that by the time you were finishing it up it would be all over the place…..and by golly it did not disappoint…..my fingers and face were covered in mayo as I took my last few bites….it was a fiver….(took five napkins to finish)…..the more napkins, the better in my book…..

I'M A FRY-GUY...BUT THESE ARE DANG GOOD

I think Hyde’s is a place Andy and Barney would have hung out in…..on those nights of patrolling they would have stopped in for a burger and eventually like Juanita (Barney’s gf on the side) Deputy Fife would have tried making a date with the waitress…..the food is just Mayberry good…..and every once in a while you have to sleep between the chairs on the ironing board…..
